Common Myths About Developer Relations (And Why They're Not True)

I attended this workshop organized by SheBuilds ( workshop 2: Busting Myths about DevRel with Unnati, engineer @ Zomato) recently where Unnati talked about What is DevRel, How to become a DevRel, and What are some common Myths when it comes to DevRel.

The session started with explaining the term DevRel and what it actually means, it then proceeded to the umbrella term and how one can become DevRel.

The major points covered were :

  1. Create videos of projects you are or were working on.

  2. Join the concerned communities.

  3. Contribute towards open source community.

We were even informed about the interview that takes place in course of becoming a DevRel.

The interview is basically a 2 or 3-round interview :

ROUND 1 - Task bound round.

ROUND 2 - Present a ppt about what you covered in the project.

This furthermore, brought along the topic of what a Roadmap should be for someone trying to become DevRel should look like.

So the roadmap does not have a specific path. It should just include the following major points :

• Making projects

• Participating in hackathons

• Helping people with the knowledge one has gained over time.

• Posting about one's learnings

Some common myths about DevRel were addressed, namely :

  1. Do not run from Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA).

  2. No prior experience is required as such.

  3. More followers on any social platform don't mean you have a higher chance of becoming a DevRel.

  4. One can even become a DevRel with a non-tech background.

And with that, to end the workshop, a Q&A session took place where everyone could clear any doubts they had regarding the workshop. This workshop was all in all a great experience and for someone who knew close to nothing about DevRel, it was very informative too.

Thanks to @hashnode and #shebuilds for this wonderful session.
